Nikki Giovanni

Join us for a fascinating afternoon with this world-renowned
poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator,
riffing, rapping, chatting, reading variations on the theme of love
from her book, Bicycles: Love Poems.

Nikki Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Over the past thirty years, her outspokenness, in her writing and in lectures, has brought the eyes of the world upon her. With a career that has earned accolades, honorary degrees and awards she is one of the most widely - read American poets and is University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. She prides herself on being "a Black American, a daughter, a mother." Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality. Her focus is on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others.

She is a writer who entertains, challenges, informs and inspires. Nikki authored more than twenty-seven books, including the seminal Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgement. Her children's book Rosa, about civil rights legend Rosa Parks, reached #3 on The New York Times bestseller list and shortly after its release, Bicycles: Love Poems reached #1 on Amazon.com for Poetry. Nikki is the recipient of the McDonald’s Literary Achievement Award for Poetry and the Langston Hughes Award.

Sometimes controversial, sometimes ethereal, always beautiful, her poems move readers of all backgrounds and generations. Nikki reminds us that love can be experienced in many ways, at every age. When her life was spinning out of control after the loss of her mother and her sister and a massacre at Virginia Tech, where she teaches, she rediscovered love -- what she calls “the antidote.”   With fearless passion and spirited wit, Nikki rhapsodizes in “Bicycles” about romance, love and the joys of life – all the things that give us balance between heartache and loss.

Join us for this unique opportunity to meet Nikki Giovanni in this intimate setting and add your own thoughts to the dialogue with her in this engaging “Conversations with Wise Women” series.
